Churchwell Pediatric Dentistry
First Visit
Our office and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend your child establish a "Dental Home". Your child should visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth comes in, usually between 6 and 12 months of age. Early examination and preventive care will protect your child's smile now and in the future.
We will do everything possible to make this first visit a positive and enjoyable experience. During the exam, we will check all of your child's existing teeth for decay, examine your child's bite and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues. We will also educate the parents and child about oral health care basics and discuss dental developmental issues and answer any questions.
What to tell your child
If your child should ask questions, explain that the Doctor is only going to look at their teeth, and will always explain everything that is going to be done before it happens. In discussing dentistry, please do not use the words: "needle", "shot", "drill", "pull", "hurt", or any other words that might have an unpleasant meaning.
We invite you to stay with your child during the initial examination. During future appointments, we prefer that the parents remain in the reception area. This allows us to establish a closer rapport with your child. Our purpose is to gain your child's confidence and overcome apprehension. However, if we feel the child would do better with your presence you are more than welcome to accompany your child to the treatment room.
